Program Description

LOCATION
Lisbon, forever known as the ancient city of the explorers, molded by generations of invaders and rulers from diverse cultures and backgrounds, has one of the most colorful cultures and architectures in Europe—you can easily find elements of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, Traditional Portuguese, Modern and Post-Modern styles in a single day around the city.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Lisbon is a fascinating mix of the old-fashioned and the trendy; the historic and the contemporary. There is always plenty to do, see and experience in Lisbon.

UMass in Lisbon, sponsored by the UMass Dartmouth Center for Portuguese Studies with the support of the Luso-American Foundation, offers American students the opportunity to spend a semester or year in the vibrant capital city of Lisbon learning about the vast Portuguese-speaking world and European Union. As the only residential study abroad program in Portugal managed directly by a major American university, UMass in Lisbon provides unrivaled access to one of the world's most strategic centers of language and culture. A significant number of field trips will complement classroom learning, and living accommodations and classrooms will be shared with European ERASMUS and Portuguese university students. Administrative assistance is available 24/7.

CREDITS
Students must study full time at the home and host Institutions. With the completion of the Request for Prior Approval of Transfer Credit of Study Abroad Programs form, your credits (not grades) will transfer towards your degree at UMass Boston. This form can be obtained from the Study Abroad office.

COURSES & CURRICULUM
UMass in Lisbon offers two types of courses: 1) UMass courses that are taught either by resident UMass faculty and/or local faculty hired by UMass, and 2) classes taught by ISCTE faculty and/or other Lisbon-area university partners. The UMass classes generally revolve around themes relevant to the Lusophone world and are selected for their broad applicability in meeting degree requirements from a variety of potential majors. ISCTE and other university partners provide Portuguese language courses at all levels as well as a wide array of other courses taught in English, particularly in international business and economics, but also some courses in the social sciences and in the School of Technology and Architecture. All of our courses are open to ISCTE and ERASMUS mobility students at no charge and vice versa, making our classrooms truly international.

ELIGIBILITY
Undergraduate and graduate students who have currently completed at least one year of full-time study with the most recent semester completed at UMass Boston are eligible. Students must be in good academic standing (at least 2.75 GPA) with no disciplinary problems. No language requirement is necessary. However, some knowledge of Portuguese would insure the maximum benefit of this study abroad program.

REQUIREMENTS
UMASS students who wish to apply for the UMass in Lisbon program need the following forms. Every application must include the following:

1.) A copy of your most recent university transcript
2.) Online Application form incl. student statement
3.) Letter of recommendation
4.) Portuguese language proficiency (if applicable)
